The game was rated PEGI 12 for non-realistic violence towards human characters, sexual posturing, the use of offensive language and mild swearing. Not appropriate for persons below 12 years of age.
The King of Fighters has become a major business, generating huge profits and numerous spin-off tournaments worldwide. However, this led to a lowering of the overall quality, and voices began to rise across the globe demanding the formation of one unique, worldwide King of Fighters competition.

Rating issues

Arcade style beat em’ up. Lots of exaggerated movements and responses to the violence, but no realistic reactions. There is the use of words such as ‘shitbag’, ‘shitheads’ and ‘assholes’. Sexual posturing appears occasionally in the game; examples include:

•A female seen sitting, with legs astride, on the upper chest of her female opponent close to her face, who is lying on her back on the ground.
•A female is gripped around the back of neck and pulled forcibly into the cleavage of the opponent. and held there for a length of time.
